Vic: Reporting systems, medical equipment need improvement

Health groups have called for improved reporting standards and better equipment inVictorian hospitals after it was revealed 16 people died from medical mistakes last financialyear.

The Australian Council for Safety and Quality report also found almost a dozen peoplesuffered injury because medical staff treated the wrong patient or body part, left instrumentsbehind after surgery and caused neurological damage.

It says five more patients committed suicide in hospital.

Australian Medical Association Victorian president SAM LEES says the report shows morestate government funding is required to reduce the risk to public health patients.

Dr LEES says the AMA will advise the government to urgently implement a structuredmaintenance and replacement strategy throughout the public hospital system.

The Australian Healthcare Association says the report shows a national public reportingframework is needed.
