NSW: Main stories in today's Sydney newspapers=4

THE AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW:

Page 1: A Federal Court judge has cited evidence of "serious misconduct" and "ruthless
disregard" for the interests of investors and creditors in the collapsed Westpoint property
group as he appointed receivers to the personal assets of founder Norm Carey and three
other directors.

Page 3: The University of NSW will next year merge its booming Faculty of Commerce
and Economics with the Australian Graduate School of Management in a radical shake-up
of business education driven by incoming vice-chancellor Fred Hilmer.

Page 5: Australia need not worry about becoming a "banana republic" as a result of
its record current account deficit, because the measure ignores huge gains that Australians
and their super funds have made after they rushed into offshore equity markets.

World: China's economy surged into 2006, fuelled by accelerating exports and strong
investment and bank lending, a performance that has prompted speculation about a policy
response from Beijing in coming weeks.

Markets: The Australian sharemarket retreated yesterday from its peak as rising crude
oil prices and a stronger than expected increase in US inflation prompted investors to
cash in profits after recent gains.
